If the function of an artifact has to be central in the studies of any production of a society, the role of the image has always been approached through questions of propaganda, without even trying to define what propaganda could be in ancient societies. Yet, the intention – as E. Panofsky used to define it – behind an image has to be linked to the object's function; the original function could sometimes even be diverted for the only purpose of bearing an image. The function of some objects in ancient Near Eastern material culture has never been determined. For instance, the figurative inlaid panels, found in a poor state of preservation, have been interpreted through many functional theories, rarely based on serious iconographical or archaeological analysis that would help to answer to the basic questions one would have to ask when studying a figurative document: who produces? For whom? For what purpose? How? At what moment? Etc. We will here present some examples belonging to the material culture of the ancient Near East during the Early Bronze Age through a methodology used for the study of the figurative inlaid panels of Mari (Syria, IIIrd millennium B.C.), in order to show how it is possible to reconsider some of the functional aspects of these objects which, without the help of textual sources or precise discovery contexts, were understood as the simple representation of historical events, or only used in order to illustrate the life of the ancient Mesopotamians.

The archaeological research at Incoronata (Southern Italy) conducted since 2002 by a team from the Laboratoire d'Archéologie et Histoire Merlat (LAHM, UMR 6566, University of Rennes 2) allowed the discovery of a fundamental site from the Iron Age and the Archaic Period, and a significant corpus of Indigenous and Greek ceramics. The existence of a local ceramic craft activity starting from the 8th century BC has been proved; in the 7th century BC will coexist Indigenous and Greek potters. We know quite well that in ancient societies the function of a vase is far from easy to determine. Moreover, in a context of production – which, additionally, is mixed – the function, use and destination of the studied vases are all the more difficult to establish that they are many. Their study requires an appropriate and adaptive methodology. That methodology should account for the following questions: How can we describe the difference between the function that was intended for the vase and the use (or uses) which was (were) made of it? What can we tell about the destination of some vases that remain in the area where they were crafted? What are the criteria to recognize and differentiate in a crafting area, on the one hand the vases intended to be distributed and consumed and on the other hand the vases to be used in the production cycle? At last, in a production context which sees the coexistence of two different cultures, can we expect some functional reassignments? Differentiated destinations for the same typology? What kind of criteria can we choose and set? What could these vases tell us about the societies that created them? With this contribution, we won't answer unequivocally to all these questions, but we will try to offer methodological food for thoughts.

The architectural distinctiveness of gallo-roman temples – a cella encircled by a peripheral gallery – often raises questions about its origin. Commonly justified as an inconsistency between its era and its date of onset, this problem echoes back to an old debate between Celtic continuity and Roman influence. Studies performed throughout the 20th century show that discourse of French scientists evolved from a mere comparatism to a functional assumption of a Gallic circumambulation ritual. A reassessment of the documentary records put the fanum back to a functional analysis of space where temples seem to be the result of a slow progression of cultural practice. The addition of a peripheral gallery, this emblematic architectural element of temple structure, reveals the influence of Roman rites in Celtic exhibitions. This example helps to illustrate the risk of a too prompt and superficial analysis of archaeological sources, based solely on the functional aspect. The “document” in itself has to be handled with care as the category of gallo-roman temples appears to be the result of a modern scientific construction leading to a standardisation of an old and diversified reality. Research about its origin needs to take into account these methodological limits.

Since the international colloquium organized in Toulouse in 2008, “ Decoration and architecture in Gaul, from Antiquity to Early Middle Ages : mosaic, wall-painting, stucco ”, the combine study of the antique architectural surfaces has been brought forward, which allowed to shed some new light on various aspects of the subject, particularly with regard to the function. To answer the question, the geographical area studied is composed of three bordering civitates where some important elements of decoration were discovered, from the first century B.-C. to the fifth century A.-C, from the beginning to the end of the Gallo-roman period. The architectural surfaces show first the adaptation of the Roman culture, as well as the ostentatious function demanded by rich owners of the late Antiquity. Besides the inherent and main esthetic function of the Gallo-Roman architectural surfaces, we have to ask ourselves about the other reasons for these elements’ presence. By studying the various materials used and the iconography which is on wall-paintings, stuccos or mosaics, we can make sense of the ostentatious function. Finally, the architectural surfaces reflect the way of life for both society and individuals. They are, indeed, elements of Romanization and correspond to personal choices inherent to an owner in the case of a private building, or to a whole community, in the case of public buildings.
