Bien qu’il ne soit pas ici question de proposer une nouvelle réflexion sur ce type de sources2, il convient néanmoins de réfléchir aux méthodologies existantes dans la datation des chartes, parfois sibyllines, mais au contenu précieux. Des indices existent qui permettent de resserrer les intervalles chronologiques : des mentions abbatiales ou épiscopales, la présence de témoins ou de signataires, jusqu’à l’analyse philologique des préambules ou des formules comminatoires. Malheureusement, la nature des cartulaires peut faire craindre une réécriture, des classements incohérents, des disparitions préjudiciables d’actes et des interprétations faussées par les aléas de la conservation ou des choix liés aux besoins des communautés. Mais, sur le fond, est-ce forcément la datation rigoureuse qui importe le plus ? Ne peut-on pas avancer à tâtons dans l’ombre d’une estimation, d’une fourchette chronologique ? Faut-il chercher à décrypter l’impossible, quitte à dénaturer ces sources déjà trop manipulées, et à charger leurs composantes hypothétiques ? Et si l’observation des relais de pouvoir permettait d’avancer « anthropologiquement » dans un sillon où la datation devient parfois secondaire ? L’absence de datation précise ou d’indices implicites peut aussi être l’aveu d’une permanence des pratiques sociales qui se cachent derrière un acte de cartulaire. One of the difficulties in the use of the sources from pre-medieval times Auvergne is the dating – be it rigorous or else estimated – of the charters contained in the cartularies, which allow to observe the games of power between the local protagonists involved. Although it is by no means here question to present a further reflexion on this type of sources, it nevertheless appears appropriate to think about the existing methodologies in the dating of charters, themselves at times sibylline but precious in their contents. Some clues exist, which allow to lessen chronological gaps: abbey or Episcopal mentions, the presence of witnesses or signatories, even the philological analysis of preambles or comminatory formulae. Unfortunately, the very nature of cartularies might induce the feared presence of rewritings, incoherent orders, prejudicial disappearances of acts and interpretations, distorted by the hazards of conservation or the decisions linked to the needs of the communities. But on the whole, is a rigorous dating utterly necessary? Can we not gropingly tread on the path of an estimation, of a chronological range? Do we have to try and decipher the impossible, thus risking to impair these already over-manipulated sources and to increase their hypothetical components?
