Despite the dynamism of the works related to the territoriality in the Latin East, Mount Lebanon remains a forgotten area in studies of this kind. However, due to its geographical, ethnic and confessional specificities, this area is particularly well suited to this type of analysis. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to fill this void by relying on the vitality of studies related to space and territory in the Latin East. Then, to begin a reflection on the strategies used by Frankish power to try to establish and perpetuate its domination over this disputed border region, which was at the heart of the power balance between Franks and Muslims in the 12th and 13th centuries.

The study of the places mentioned in several narrative sources of the Sénonais (ixth-xiith century) allows us to understand the spatial universe of the authors and to analyze the links that this universe maintains with the political evolution of the time. In particular, it allows us to understand the evolution of the notion of Francia during the period studied.

The Latin word quintana, which is rarely found in the texts and is translated as 'market', seems to have originated in the Roman military camp: the market near the camp. But it seems to have left numerous toponymic traces, derived from the oral language, throughout the territory of the Empire. The study of the location of these toponyms shows that they are mainly linked to roads, ports and the outskirts of towns. The comparisons that can be made with words in the lexicon: cantine, canton, cantonnement, etc. show the coherence of this lexical family with the military domain, trade and the control of space. Their trajectory leads from the Roman period (quintana, market; quintanari, soldiers assigned to the trade routes) through the High Middle Ages (centena, territory and territorial militia, centenarius, master of the market, centenarium, guardhouse, fort) to the modern meanings of canton, territory of conscription and then of justice, which is thus much more than the banal "corner of the country" of Romance linguistics.

The regressive study of the land parcels allows us to understand the different archaeological structures that represent the different powers inherent to the medieval period. Gençay is no exception to the rule : the seigniorial power is materialised by the triangular castle standing at the confluence of the Belle and Clouère rivers, while the religious power is materialised by different places of religious exercise such as the Saint-Marie church (parish church) or the Saint-Maurice priory situated in the heart of the eponymous suburb. This article proposes to look at another power, the economic power. Although this power appears to be closely linked to the two previously mentioned powers, it also seems to have been exercised by a local elite with storage space and rights at fairs and markets. The first idea is therefore to see, through the various mentions in our possession, what is the influence of these fairs and markets and by percolation to apprehend the power possessed by these local elites. The second idea is to highlight the materiality of this power, notably through the study of the evolution of the plot of land, but also through the study of the storage structures in direct link with the market halls, a central and essential economic space in medieval towns.

The paper focuses on the interpretation of a passage of Pindar’s Nemean 4, which deals with the list of territories over which the Aiakids, heroes of Aegina, wielded their power (ll. 44-56). This list, which can be considered as a sort of mythic and historical picture of Aegina’s power, has a specific rhetorical function within the ode, and contributes to reinforce its encomiastic purpose.

Between 1486 and 1541, the king of Portugal became the suzerain of the largest number of coastal cities in the Atlantic Maghreb. The conquest of these cities was only possible thanks to the constant collaboration and negotiations with the local ruling classes. The study of the Portuguese conquest, with its emphasis on negotiations, leads us to a critical revision of the term “Peace Moors”. Historiography generally uses this term to designate the Maghrebi vassals of the Portuguese king, subjected to the colonial order. Based on a detailed analysis of the conquest of the city of Safi, we will see how this term is insufficient and ineffective to account for the multiplicity of political projects in dispute in the Maghreb of this period.
