This article analyses the uniform of the Royal-Carabinier Regiment as a technical and aesthetic object that contributed to the development of the regiment’s wartime culture. Between the end of the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries, the uniform gradually became the tool of a new operational, disciplinary and sanitary efficiency, making it possible to abolish the social distinctions introduced by the pomp of certain troops. For the Royal-Carabinier, from 1693 onwards, the uniform became an active part of their identity, providing us with an original means of studying the wartime culture of these soldiers. Several questions arise. What place did the regiment occupy in the appearance of military society and in the ongoing institutionalization process ? Did the uniform have a technical or merely aesthetic role ? How did it contribute to the construction of a warrior and professional identity specific to the Carabiniers ? This paper analyze how the uniform of the Royal-Carabinier, a privilege in the early eighteenth century, reflects their particular culture of arms and their place in the military environment’s apparatus system.
