This paper examines the eastern part of the area occupied by the palace of the counts of Poitou, later dukes of Aquitaine, in Poitiers, a space where power, social interaction, and commercial activity converged. From the Middle Ages onward, the palaceserved as to focal point that reshaped the surrounding urban and social fabric. By the Modern period, the nearby housing and shops reflected the dynamics of a “space of display,” where architecture and commerce together expressed the identity and social ambitions of the urban elites. Archaeological surveys conducted in the cellars, though providing little evidence of specific functions, revealed their almost exclusive use as storage areas connected to the shops above. The analysis of façades and dwellings reveals a landscape marked by the contrast : carved timber frames and standing beside stone houses, both demonstrating a shared desire for social affirmation. Cross‑referencing parish and fiscal archives sheds further light on the area’s socio‑professional structure. The rue du Marché Notre‑Dame emerges as a thriving commercial hub, centred on the display of luxur, home to silk drapers, hatmakers, and goldsmiths. These trades catered to a wealthy clientele of jurists, academics, and notables, further enhancing the prestige of the neighbourhood. In this way, the surroundings of the palace appear as a symbolic space, where political power, urban elites, and luxury trade collectively stage the city’s brilliance.
